My Fourth Week of Flowing Forwards!

This week was, by far, one of the best weeks on my learning project journey so far. I feel as though my practices were so beneficial to me and my body. My schoolwork has been neverending, so yoga was a great way for me to listen to my body and find a sense of relaxation. Again this week, I used two videos from Yoga with Adriene. The first one I used was titled 30-Minute Yoga With Adriene to Reduce Stress, and it was a beginner vinyasa flow. After completing the first video, I began to feel as though my body was wanting more from my practice, so I felt as though it was time for me to step it up and try more advanced exercises. As the saying goes: “A little goes a long way,” so I opted for another one of Adriene’s videos, this one more advanced and called Power Yoga Break | Yoga for Weight LossI am most definitely not using my journey to aid in weight loss, but safe to say, I definitely felt the burn in my arms, core, glutes, and legs after the video, but the right kind of burn! There was definitely some sweat mixed in too. Beginning to use more advanced videos has taught me that even the most simple looking movements can be complicated. I am excited to try out more advanced videos to test and see what my body is capable of.

Since I was sick and feeling out of sorts last week, my energy level was shallow, but this week I am feeling back to normal, so I thought it would be an excellent time to put my body up to a challenge. After each video I used, I took some time to practice several poses, learn new ones, and also began using yoga blocks. I have never looked at myself as being a flexible person but using a block really put my balance and flexibility to the test. I was able to find out that I am more flexible in one leg than the other (see in pictures below). The first time I used a block, I began to feel quite frustrated because I was finding it hard to balance. Once I began to feel the frustration, I stopped and stood back, took a few deep breaths, and then tried it again. I find it very important that my brain is focused and in the moment when using the blocks to help myself relax and avoid the frustration. But I know if I continue using them and put my mind to it, that I will get better the more I practice.

I hope you enjoyed my post this week, and stay tuned for my next yoga post in two weeks!

-Namaste-

  1. Hi Jaelyn. Good job on your yoga journey. It sounds like you have a really good handle on listening to your body which is so important in yoga. I haven’t done it in a few years but I really enjoyed it when I used to go to classes. It’s incredible how hard of a workout you can get by holding poses and challenging muscles. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks, Lauren! I have definitely been challenging my body since I began my yoga journey. The day after I finished my last practice over the break, I woke up with quite sore muscles, but it was sore in a good way. Thanks for your comment!

  2. Hey Jaelyn! Good for you, I tried a yoga class a couple years ago and it was really relaxing and good for me, however, I found it really difficult and it hurt my wrists! It is a great time to do yoga, especially with assignments and midterms. Great pictures of your poses, thanks for sharing! Can’t wait to see your post next week!

    1. Yes, I am so happy that I chose to do yoga! I have definitely learned that it can be hard on the wrists, but have found some stretches to help, and have become more aware of where I am shifting my weight to during my practice. It has been a good stress reliever for me, to say the least. Thanks for your comment!

  3. Hi Jaelyn! I love that your learning project incorporates you-time and relaxation (even though it may be frustrating). I can relate to your comment about having your muscles burn after the Power Yoga video. I have done a few Hot Power Yoga classes, and let me tell you, I felt the burn. If after you finish your learning project you really enjoy yoga, I suggest trying hot yoga! It kicks it up a notch and is super relaxing. Also, good call using the block for balance – those are a lifesaver! As well, I really enjoy that you add in the photos to track/show your progress with poses. 🙂

I can’t wait to see what you do in the upcoming weeks!

    1. Hi Regan! Yes, I am so happy I chose yoga for my Learning Project because it has benefitted me so much. I love how I can relax and challenge my body for a class. In terms of hot yoga, it is something I am hoping to try for sure. I had a friend that tried one of the hot yoga studios in Regina and loved it, so I think it’ll be something worth trying and looking into. Thanks for your positive feedback! 🙂

  4. Hi Jaelyn! I love the pictures of you doing yoga, thank you for incorporating those. I have a friend who is taking a Kinesiology class right now and it is actually a yoga class. She had just learnt the other day about the history of yoga and told me some things– quite fascinating! Have you ever looked into it? Keep up the great work!

    1. Hi Brittney!
Yes, someone had commented a few weeks back on the yoga class at the University! I am going to look into it for the Fall semester. Since I started my practice, it is something that I can definitely see myself continuing to do after EDTC300 is finished, since I have found it to be so beneficial for my health and overall well-being.

  5. Hey Jaelyn, I’m glad the yoga helped you get rid of some stress and let you relax a little bit. Your improvement looks really good so far. I love how you added pictures of you doing the yoga poses because it helps us see what each pose looks like. I can see where the difficulty comes in though! My balance is horrible and I feel I would tip right over trying some of those poses. Good luck with the rest of your project 🙂

    1. Hi Reilee!
I’m happy you see progress so far, I feel as though I have progressed quite well so far, but it is nice to see that other people are seeing it too! I am finding it to be beneficial to take images and videos of different poses throughout my practice as a way to track my progress. The balance has definitely been a challenge for sure, but I am getting better at relaxing and not getting frustrated as easily when I am struggling with balance. Thank you for your comment!
